Trailers Capacity

Overview:

1) Standard Trailer Bed Size:

40′ x 8′ x 8′. But over length consignments up to 50’, width 12′ and height 10′ can be loaded.

In a standard trailer, consignment having 40’x8’x8′ can be careered without any hindrance. Side, Rear & Over Head projections mean over width, over length & over height i.e. more than 8′ in width & 40′ in length and 8′ in height.

2) OD Consignments:

OD Consignments mean abnormal or over-sized by length, width and height than the Standard Tractor-Trailer Bed which is 40′ in length and 8′ in width and height clearance upto 16′ from the ground level. (11′ plus trailer bed height 5′)  For normal consignments, height should be well below 11′.

Equipment having height more than 11′ cannot pass through rail gate over head barriers and under the rail bridges as the maximum height clearance is 15’6″ to 16′ from ground level (10’6″ trailer bed height of 5′).

These consignments can be carried in Low Bed Trailers only having ground clearance from 2′ to 4′. If the consignments are much more in height, the truckers take diverted routes to avoid over head bridges and also arrange to open over head barriers against certain amount payable to Railways.

If the consignments are more than 13′ from ground level (5′ plus 8′) the truckers are fined by Motor Vehicle Inspectors who are patrolling in Highways.

Example: 1,

If (suppose) a Wheel Excavator is having 362cms in height i.e. 11’11”. This can be loaded in a Low Bed Trailer having 3′ ground clearance

Normally, minimum Low Bed Trailer hire is two & half times more than standard trailer hire subject to its dimension

Example: 2,

If (suppose) a Dump Truck is having 323 CMS in height i.e. 10 ‘ 7″.  This can be carried in a Semi Low Bed having ground clearance of 4’6″ to 5’. Semi Bed Trailers bed length is 32′ plus neck length 4″(Total 36 feet). But, hire is more because of over height.

• High Bed / Semi Low Bed Trailer

  Normally used for 40′ container and lengthy materials but its carrying capacity is lesser than semi low bed trailer because heavy equipment require low distribution and stability while being hauled. Its ground clearance is also less than high bed which gives additional support. While high bed is having flat bed up to 40′ semi low bed is 32′ to 40’. But the loading space available will be 32′ because of its goose neck having length of 8′. Goose neck means it is hump at the front of semi low bed trailer.

• Low Bed Trailer / Drop Bed Trailer

  The Low bed trailer has bed height lower than the flat high bed trailer. A Drop low bed trailer is lower than the low bed trailer and its bed height.

 Low Bed Trailers have a bed height of 2-3 feet. These are generally used when the height of the cargo is above 12 feet or there are many lower overhead obstructions.
