Nepal is a land-locked country and relies on the Kolkata and VIZAG Ports in India for handling practically all of its imports by sea. Birgunj dry port (Birgunj Inland Container Depot) at Sirsiya is the only dry port in the country connected by railway from Kolkata/Haldia/Vizag via Raxaul, India to Sirsiya, Nepal and operate as a center for trans-shipment and importation of (Sea) cargo to inland destinations into Nepal.
The other three active dry ports are Biratnagar, Bhairawa and Nepalgunj ICD. But they are not connected by rail from India.
In addition, Five more ICDs are planned at Tatopani, Rasuwa, for shipments to/from China Kathmandu and Kakarbhitta and Dodhara Chandani. Birgunj dry port covers an area of 38 hectares including Integrated custom Point (ICP ) , Four shed houses, Terminal buildings, Weighing bridges, Two banks, Six lines for train container yard.
The dry port came in operation from 16 July 2004.
The purpose of the Integrated Custom Point (ICP) is to integrate efficient customs clearance processes at the authorized border crossing points to facilitate clearance of cargo and people in support of trade between Nepal and India. The ICD and ICP facilities are located next to each other at the border.
Alongside Air and Sea Freight, Rail freight transport is now an increasingly attractive way of Importing as well as exporting goods between Nepal and other countries. The main benefits are Rail freight transport is faster than sea freight, and more cost-effective than air freight.
